Research Groups

The SBBN affiliates belong to research groups in universities and scientific institutions, which have international collaborations.

1. Radiation protection and radioecology studies (GERAR in Portuguese)
Leaders: Ademir de J. Amaral and Edvane B. da Silva (Pernambuco Federal University, Nuclear Engineering Department, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil). Multidisciplinary team working in biological phenomena modelling, in Health and Environmental field, associating several experiences for cytogenetic and molecular investigation.

2. Physics, applications and radiation effects
Leader: Thiago de Salazar e Fernandes (Pernambuco Federal University, Biophysics and Radiobiology Department, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil)
The team has been contributed in the field of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation biological effects applying biodosimetry techniques, as well as analyzing the impact of radiation in the environmental.

3. Implications of the free radicals in pathologies
Leader: Liliane F. Bauermann (Santa Maria Federal University, Physiology Department, Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil)
The team has been developing pharmacological models for investigating inflammation, ulcer, cicatrization, among other diseases, testing drugs that may attenuate these damages due to oxidative stress and antioxidant defenses. The drugs may be medicinal plants (natural resources) or synthetic ones. The research aims to provide new alternatives for the treatment of radiation injuries.

6. Nanobiotecnology applyed to the health
Leader: Valbert Nascimento Cardoso (Minas Gerais Federal University, Pharmacy School, Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil).
The research group develops research focusing the development of new radiopharmaceuticals based in radiolabeled nanostructures, for diagnostic and treatment of cancer as well as the diagnostic by images of infection/inflammation foci. Furthermore, based in nuclear techniques evaluate the side effects caused by chemotherapeutic agents in the intestinal epithelium and the beneficial effects by immunonutrients upon these damages.
